I was inspired to make this potholder by an image I found online. I'm grateful to the clever weaver who came up with this alternative weaving pattern.
This one is not complicated, but it's a bit hard to explain. For the most part (except at the beginning and end of rows), you will go over and under four colors together--one white strand (that is, one-half loop) on either side of one green loop. See close-up image below.
Vertical: Attach green, white, green, white, all the way across.
First horizontal row (from the bottom): Weave a white loop under the green loop and then under one strand of a white loop. Then weave over the four colors together (one white strand, a green loop, another white strand). Follow this pattern across.
Second horizontal row: Weave a red loop over the green loop and over one white strand; then weave under the four colors together (one white strand, a green loop, another white strand), then over those four colors, etc.
Third row: Repeat the second row exactly to create a thick red stripe.
Fourth row: Start the pattern over, weaving in a white loop.
Fifth row: Repeat fourth row exactly to make a thick white stripe.
Below is a close-up of the first few rows:
And here is a close-up of the end of the row (Note: the end of the row may vary a bit if you're weaving on a larger loom).
This potholder has a thick spongy feel compared to the usual woven potholder:
